The percentage of veterans receiving compensation for disabilities from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs varies widely by state. Officials say there are many reasons for this, including differences in local outreach efforts and demographics. The national average is 9.9 percent.

In the ranking below, the first category lists the state, the second is number of veterans, and the third is the percentage receiving disability payments.
